Vancouver, BC – February 16, 2025 – On February 16, the Vancouver Youth Assistance Society (VYAS) successfully hosted its Member Day event at the Chinatown Museum in Downtown Vancouver. In partnership with the Hand-in-Hand Foundation, VYAS created a one-of-a-kind cultural exploration experience for children with autism.

Early in the morning, volunteers arrived at the museum to meticulously prepare for the event. With over 50 attendees, their role extended beyond organizing the tour—they also ensured that children with autism felt comfortable and supported throughout the visit.
As the tour began, volunteers remained close to the children, offering guidance and companionship. Every exhibit in the museum served as a gateway to history, and the museum guides patiently explained each display using engaging language and relatable examples.

Some children became captivated by specific exhibits, pausing for long periods to take in every detail. Volunteers patiently stood by their side, embracing their curiosity and letting them explore at their own pace. Others felt uneasy in the unfamiliar environment, and volunteers responded with gentle reassurance, helping them feel safe and secure.
For children who became overwhelmed by the noise, volunteers had stress-relief toys on hand, offering comfort and a moment of calm. Once the child felt ready, volunteers would check in with them and gently guide them back into the group.

One young volunteer shared, “At first, I felt nervous and unsure of how to communicate with children with autism. But as the day went on, I realized that if I paid attention to their needs and accompanied them with kindness, they could feel my sincerity.”
Children with autism experience the world in unique ways. Though they may not always express themselves in traditional ways, their perception is keen, and many possess extraordinary talents.

One of the most moving moments of the event came when Ryan, a young participant, played the piano. His heartfelt performance filled the room, creating a powerful and emotional connection between him and the audience. As the final note echoed, a wave of applause erupted—everyone in the room could feel the brilliance and passion within him.

The VYAS Member Day was more than just a museum visit; it was a bridge of understanding, compassion, and inclusion. It allowed children with autism to engage with culture in a meaningful way while also fostering greater awareness and appreciation from the broader community.

VYAS hopes to continue this mission, welcoming more volunteers and supporters to help create a world where every child—regardless of their challenges—feels valued, understood, and embraced.
